Christ Church Grammar School
Refurbishment, Extension, Plaza
Claremont, Perth WA
Originally built in 1965, R Block has housed the school’s refectory since 1990. The refurbishment and extension to R Block ensures that this building at the heart of the Christ Church campus will remain the School’s social hub well into the future.
The refurbished refectory on the ground level needed to be durable and versatile. With bi-fold doors along the length of the building it opens up to a newly remodelled terrace and Student Plaza covered by a polycarbonate roof providing protection from the elements. The space has been designed for day-to-day use by over a thousand boys at a time, and also for staff and parent functions. It is furnished with lighting, fixed furniture and a BBQ facility. The upper-level accommodates the language department in the new, elevated block that contains four classrooms. The interior design of each new classroom reflects the four languages taught at Christ Church. Paving, a retaining wall and steps, a remodelled amphitheatre and landscaping tie the new infill work into the campus context.
